Due to a combination of a raw product shortages and the discontinuation of manufacturing by several companies there has been intermittent nationwide shortages of the generic doxycycline capsules and tablets. As a result of the decreased number of manufacturers of these products, there has been a wholesale price increase of more than 4 ½ times the previous cost. This increase is manufacturer driven and not a PharmCare USA pricing policy.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline derivative used in the treatment for several gram-negative and also gram-positive bacterial infections (including respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, Mycoplasma pneumonia, Haemophilus influenza, or Klebsiella species). Doxycycline has also been used as an adjunctive treatment for severe acne, various tick-borne diseases and as an alternative to penicillin in the treatment for various sexually transmitted diseases.

What does the Doxycycline price increase mean to my facility, prescribers and residents?

  • Facilities and prescribers may wish to review the residents receiving the doxycycline to determine if it is still medically necessary for the resident.
  1. oBased upon specific culture and sensitivity data, alternative antibiotics may be an option for some residents.
  • Lastly, if the use of doxycycline is continued, each facility needs to be aware that the price increase will affect their drug budget in 2013. If you have questions, please contact your Pharmcare locations.
